Crossbow shooting competition among the Contrade of Volterra
On May 26, in Piazza dei Priori in Volterra, you can watch the Tournament of the Crossbowmen.
The crossbow competition retraces a tradition dating back to the city's 14th-century history, when each Contrada brought its best crossbowmen before the Master of Arms, the Company Captain and the Noble Priors in order to strengthen the city's militia.
Two crossbowmen from each Contrada will compete in the tournament, first within each pair to determine who will represent the Contrada within the City Company, and then the eight winners will compete for a chance to be named Prior of the Crossbowmen.
