Historical tournament between flag-wavers in Volterra

The Astiludio Storico (Historical Astiludio) is a tournament that has seen nationwide flag-wavers compete for 44 years in the beautiful setting of Piazza dei Priori in Volterra.

The tournament commemorates the celebrations that took place in 1406 at the news of the fall of Pisa to Florence, then Volterra's ally.

On the first Sunday in September, at exactly 3:15 p.m., the Contrade's bells will begin ringing and the four processions from their respective city gates will head to Piazza dei Priori to compete.

The Astiludio Storico includes a competition with each participating group performing for 30 minutes, preceded by the Youth Tournament competition. The participating groups compete for the Guiderdone, a prize awarded to the group with the best choreography. The jury is also composed of people chosen from the audience.
