Lucca Comics & Games is the most important fair in Italy and Europe dedicated to comics, entertainment, board and role-playing games and fantasy imagery. It's held every year in Lucca for four days between the end of October and early November.
The most important figures in the industry – publishing houses, specialists, resellers, comic artists – participate in the marketplace-exhibition in an exhibitors’ area that’s around 15,000 square meters and runs through the historic center of Lucca. There are also numerous special events on the program: meetings with Italian and international comics authors, book presentations, role playing tournaments, cosplayer performances, concerts and much more.
Every year, special exhibitions dedicated to world-famous artists are organized, housed in the palazzos and museums of the city. The Comics area is dedicated to comics and animation, while the Games area hosts roleplaying, card and board games, with exhibitors in the recreational industry: authors and publishers of games, specialized stores and associations.
The programme also includes tournaments, prizes and seminars, where special awards are given out to the best games of the year, to the best previously unpublished work and to the best handmade miniatures. Tournaments for roleplayers take place, as well as cosplay competitions and there’s even a special area dedicated to children and schools, Lucca Junior.
After the 2020 revolution, with the "remote" edition Lucca ChanGes, the festival returns to the city, live and with its usual dates, with events, meetings and appointments adapted and revised to the current situation.
The formula chosen for the 2021 edition will allow visitors to fully enjoy the festival, in peace and safety: access will be limited to about 20,000 visitors per day and you will be able to participate in all official initiatives with a ticket, which can only be purchased through the presale online. The spaces will be largely adapted, giving priority to pre-existing locations and physical buildings as much as possible over temporary pavilions.
While the city of Lucca remains open to access, it is subject to possible restrictions by the authorities. The city will not host organized free admission activities and all initiatives and events will take place in the actual festival venues. For fans of the festival and those who are curious, it's strongly recommended to arrive in Lucca upon advance purchase. There will also be musical and competitive cosplay activities, which will take place only in controlled access areas and with limited numbers.
Lucca Comics & Games 2021 will be organized into districts: the central hub will remain Piazza Napoleone with its iconic pavilion, as well as Palazzo Ducale and the familiar spaces of the Palazzetto dello Sport. The varied universes of the game will also take place in the Real Collegio and in the Cavallerizza area. Japan will be present in the large Lucca Exhibition Center, and the Music & Cosplay area will be housed in the San Francesco complex.
The multi-channel approach already tested with Lucca ChanGes remains: streaming events will return, there will be 'Campfires' throughout the country, a media partnership with Rai, and the Off digital and live programme.
