From the Cirone Pass to Mount Fontanini

Walking on the Apennine ridge that divides Tuscany from Emilia Romagna

by  Lunigiana

The hiking-level itinerary includes the same route on the outward and return legs, starting at Cirone Pass. The Church present at the Pass deserves a small detour and a photo. After that, cross the provincial road SP42 and follow the direction of Mount Fontanini.

The route runs entirely along the Apennine ridge that divides Tuscany from Emilia Romagna, intercepting wide and comfortable dirt roads. Wide panoramic pastures alternate with small beech forests, spectacular in the autumn period, the view sweeping from the Po Valley to the Apuan Alps. Mount Borgognone, Mount Beccara and finally Mount Fontanini are met in succession.

Given the type of itinerary, it is possible to complete the route even without reaching Mount Fontanini, preferring, for example, a picnic among the meadows, often the destination of grazing horses and herds, and returning to Cirone Pass by the same path as the outward journey.

A real ride between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, which can end worthily with the rediscovery of wonderful villages, Montelungo, Gravagna and Pracchiola, or with a dip in the upper Magra basin, the Piscio di Pracchiola waterfall or Palino Lake.
