Canneto

A centuries-old castle surrounded by an intact defense wall

Still encircled by a defense wall, the village of Canneto is a hamlet in the Municipality of Monteverdi Marittimo, surrounded by the forests of the Etruria Volterrana. Characterized by numerous intact tower houses, Canneto was founded as a castle around the year 1000 and was once connected to the monks at the nearby Monastery of San Pietro in Poggio a Badia.

Over time, the village developed around the castle and a church was built probably between the 11th and 12th centuries. The religious edifice, dedicated to St. Lawrence the Martyr, is Romanesque in style, even if some renovations were made in the 19th century. Inside, a bronze crucifix was discovered that likely dates to the 13th century and which is highly important from a historical point of view. Indeed, the work bears engravings of the Virgin Mary, St. John, the Angel and the sepulchre.
