Villa a Sesta

A picturesque hamlet in the Chianti countryside

In the heart of the Chianti countryside, in a landscape where art, history and nature coexist, we come across a village of ancient origins and a thousand suggestions. Villa a Sesta is a typical and picturesque Chianti village, in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, with a predominantly agricultural economy, located along the provincial road leading to Brolio. Documented since the 9th century, in 882 it appears among the allotments in favor of the abbey of S. Salvatore in Campi and then of the counts of Berardenga.

Among the buildings worth mentioning is the Pieve di Santa Maria a Villa a Sesta, recorded since the 8th century as suffragan of the Pieve di San Felice. The present building is the result of a complete rebuilding and subsequent transformations dating from the 19th century. Inside are some works of art including a wooden statue depicting the Madonna and Child attributed to Jacopo della Quercia.

On a rise not far from Villa a Sesta are the remains of Sestaccia Castle, which was one of the many Sienese castles erected to counter Florentine incursions into Sienese Chianti
