Discovering the Municipal Palace, the Picture Gallery and the Grossa Tower

A visit to San Gimignano cannot be said to be complete without seeing the Civic Museums, the complex located in Piazza del Duomo and including the Municipal Palace, the Picture Gallery and the Grossa Tower (the tallest of the towers that have come down to the present day) on which you can climb to admire a unique view from the top of the splendid medieval town.

Inside the Municipal Palace, also called Palazzo del Popolo or Palazzo Nuovo del Podestà, you can visit the Sala del Consiglio (Council Room), baptized Dante Room in memory of the Supreme Poet's stay in 1299, where there is a cycle of hunting frescoes from 1290 by the Florentine painter Azzo di Masetto, as well as the Maestà by Lippo Memmi, a follower of Simone Martini.

On the second floor of the Municipal Palace, there is the Camera del Podestà with its magnificent frescoes and the Picture Gallery, which holds masterpieces of Sienese and Florentine painters from the 13th to the 15th century, such as Filippino Lippi, Benozzo Gozzoli, Benedetto da Maiano and Pinturicchio.

The tour ends climbing the scales of the Grossa Tower, dating back to 1311, from which you can enjoy an amazing view over the whole town of San Gimignano.
