An extraordinary Christmas takes place from November 20, 2021 to January 9, 2022, as one of the most beautiful historic centres in Italy is adorned with magic.
There are many events that lie ahead of Christmas and bring us through to the beginning of the new year, starting with the unique path of lights that will present a one-of-kind experience of the architecture and historic buildings, bringing visitors along a spectacular and magical itinerary.
At the "Prato", the large green area of the city, a charming Ferris wheel will be set up that will offer breathtaking views of the entire historic centre. There will also be the "Market of Wonders", packed with typical culinary products and lots of curiosities.
Until December 26, the "Christmas Brick Arezzo" will also have a temporary home here: the Christmas village built with the most famous bricks in the world will fill over three hundred square meters in the exhibition space, where there will also be 'pick & build' workshops where both fans and the curious of all ages can have fun and express their creativity .
After December 26, two rally and Formula 1 racing simulators will arrive in the area, to the delight of motoring enthusiasts.
In Piazza Grande (until December 26) the Christmas Markets will return, organized by Confcommercio Arezzo. Experience the wonderful atmosphere of the Tyrolean Village with 32 wooden huts where exhibitors from Tyrol, Germany and Austria will offer Christmas items and typical products. Two small huts will serve the best beers and typical Tyrolean dishes.
The Christmas Gardenar, the area dedicated to fir trees, plants and green ideas for sustainable gifts, will give a touch of green to the scene.
Santa Claus' House returns to Piazza Grande, inside the Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici. Until December 19, the historic frescoed rooms will host workshops for children as well as many surprises, such as the Talking Tree, the reindeer with his famous red nose, and the giant Santa Claus that's among the largest in Italy at 5 metres high, illuminated by thousands of led lights. Visitors will also find the post office of the Arctic Circle, where children can meet Santa Claus and hand him their wish list.
The Cloister of the Library becomes the "Cloister of Wonders", hosting the best of local craftsmanship. A jewellery showcase will be curated by Confcommercio Arezzo (December 4 and 5 ), and continued with "The artisans of Christmas" initiative promoted by Confartigianato Imprese Arezzo (from December 7 to 26), ending with events dedicated to antiques ahead of the Antiques Fair that will take place in the historic centre of Arezzo on January 1 and 2, 2022.
Original nativity scenes will be set up in the churches of Arezzo, with the animated one in the church of Piazza della Badia a must-see.
Piazza San Jacopo and Piazza Risorgimento will host a traditional market with small wooden huts with a typical Christmas village atmosphere, while Piazza Guido Monaco will host the "Handmade Arts" market with entirely handmade products of various types, from objects, to costume jewellery, to accessories.
Many special events and initiatives dedicated to the theme of "wonder" will create unique atmospheres, merging with the artistic and cultural heritage of the city.
The new year will kick off with the same sense of wonder, with a festival dedicated to puppetry taking place on the weekend of December 31-January 2, featuring artists such as Teodor Borisov, aka the "Grande Lupo Bulgaro”, the undisputed master of string puppets, who uses a strongly visual and sensorial language to create magical atmospheres. He will be joined by other artists, who will make the first edition of the 2022 Antiques Fair on January 1 and 2 even more extraordinary, one of the most important and largest antiques fairs in Italy.
Arezzo Città del Natale is a project conceived the Municipality of Arezzo and now organized by the Arezzo Intour Foundation (private public DMO created to manage the Arezzo tourist destination), with the collaboration of many cultural and trade associations, local companies and artists.
